Translators Lab

Organised by The Select Centre in partnership with Writers' Centre Norwich, the Translators Lab provides excellent tutelage in a supportive environment. Whether you are tackling literary translation for the first time, or you have already started but want extra guidance, this 8-week course is for you. It will run from 12 Sep – 2 Nov, 2015.

Programme structure

There will be three parts to the Lab:

  • One-day creative writing workshop in Singapore for all participants (12 Sep);
  • Online course lasting seven weeks (19 Sep – 24 Oct);
  • Three-day literary translation boot camp in Singapore (31 Oct – 2 Nov).

Translators Lab 2015 Schedule

Week one - 12 Sep

  • Creative writing workshop in Singapore
    (12 Sep, Sat, 10am – 5pm; venue TBC)
  • Introduction to the online course and writers, assigning stories and/or poems, reading list

Week two - 19 Sep

  • First set of exercises

Week three - 26 Sep

  • Online comments and feedback

Week four - 3 Oct

  • Participants post the co-translations to date online for feedback
  • Discussion of any issues arising from the short stories being translated

Week five - 10 Oct

  • Second set of exercises

Week six - 17 Oct

  • Online comments and feedback

Week seven - 24 Oct

  • Participants to post completed first drafts of co-translations
  • Participants prepare for consensus editing of stories, with questions for the authors

Week eight - 31 Oct

  • Literary Translation Boot Camp
    (31 Oct – 2 Nov, 10am – 6pm; venue: Singapore Management University)

Week nine - 3 Nov

  • Singapore Translation Symposium
    (9am – 6pm; venue: Singapore Management University)
